The main hero is sixteen-years Miles Halter. He is interested in perimortem statements of famous people. Following the words of Francois Rabelais he leaves his boring life with parents and goes to study to the new school Culver Creek in searching of the Great Perhaps. This is the place where he finds new friends and falls in love with a girl named Alaska Young who turns his life upside down and disappears. This terrible tragedy makes Miles seriously think about questions of life and death.
